When Should You Not Use Anki?

ankilanguage learning strategyimmersion

Anki is powerful, but it is not a full language learning system by itself. If you only review cards and never consume real content, progress usually plateaus.

When Anki backfires

  • You are memorizing isolated words without context
  • You are not listening or reading daily native material
  • Your review queue is causing stress and avoidance
  • You are spending more time formatting cards than learning

Use Anki as a support tool for immersion, not as the main event. The strongest workflow is input first, cards second.

FAQ

  • Can I get fluent with Anki alone? Usually no. Fluency requires massive listening and reading input in addition to spaced repetition.
  • Should I quit Anki if reviews feel heavy? First reduce new cards and delete low-value items. If stress remains high, pause and focus on input for a while.
