Contact details

If you have questions about these Terms, you can email support@subsmith.app.

The service

SubSmith is a desktop application that generates timestamped subtitles and transcripts from local video and audio files using on-device speech recognition (Whisper), and helps you turn those transcripts into flashcards, including one-click export to Anki. These Terms govern your use of the SubSmith application and the subsmith.app website (together, the "Service").

By downloading, installing, or using SubSmith, you agree to these Terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the Service.

Trial & billing

  • SubSmith offers a 7-day free trial with full access to paid features. No card details are required to start a trial.
  • After the trial ends, continued access requires either the Annual plan ($15/year) or the Lifetime plan ($40 one-time).
  • Payments are processed by Stripe. The Annual plan automatically renews each year unless cancelled beforehand; the Lifetime plan is a single one-time payment that doesn't renew or require cancellation.
  • You can cancel the Annual plan anytime. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period, and you keep paid access until then.

Refunds

If you're not happy with your purchase, email support@subsmith.app within 14 days of payment for a full refund. Requests outside this window are considered on a case-by-case basis.

Acceptable use

You agree to use SubSmith only for lawful purposes. You may not:

  • Reverse-engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract the source code of the application, except where permitted by law.
  • Redistribute, resell, or sublicense the application without permission.
  • Use the Service to process content you don't have the right to use, or in a way that infringes the intellectual property rights of others.
  • Attempt to circumvent the Service's licensing or subscription checks.

Intellectual property

SubSmith — the application, branding, and website — is owned by the SubSmith project. Your subscription grants you a personal, non-transferable license to use the application; it doesn't transfer ownership of the software to you.

Any video, audio, transcripts, or flashcards you create using SubSmith remain yours. Since transcription happens locally on your device, I don't receive or store copies of your media files.

SubSmith is built on open-source components, including Whisper and FFmpeg. See the Acknowledgements page for licenses.

Disclaimer & liability

The Service is provided "as is," without warranties of any kind. Transcription accuracy depends on audio quality, language, and the underlying Whisper model, and I don't guarantee error-free transcripts.

To the extent permitted by law, SubSmith isn't liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from use of the Service. Nothing in these Terms limits liability where it would be unlawful to do so, for example for death or personal injury caused by negligence.

Governing law & changes

These Terms are governed by the laws of the United Kingdom.

I may update these Terms occasionally. Continued use of the Service after changes take effect means you accept the updated Terms. Material changes will be reflected by an updated "Last updated" date at the top of this page.
