These terms explain the rules for using the SubSmith website, desktop app, and mobile app. By using any part of the Service, you agree to them.

SubSmith is operated by Ibrahim Farah, a sole trader based in Birmingham, United Kingdom, trading as SubSmith. If you have questions about these Terms, you can email support@subsmith.app.
The desktop app generates timestamped subtitles and transcripts from local video and audio using on-device Whisper models, and can help turn transcripts into flashcards, including export to Anki.
The mobile app plays supported local, Photos, and YouTube content, uses available captions where possible, and can generate subtitles through a cloud transcription service. Cloud generation requires an account, network access, and sufficient transcription allowance.
By downloading, installing, or using SubSmith, you agree to these Terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the Service.
New mobile accounts currently receive a limited complimentary cloud-transcription allowance. It has no cash value, is non-transferable, and may be limited to one grant per person or account.
Desktop and mobile are currently separate products for entitlement purposes. A desktop trial, Annual plan, or Lifetime licence does not grant mobile transcription allowances, and a mobile allowance or purchase does not grant access to paid desktop features, unless an offer explicitly states otherwise.
If you're not happy with your purchase, email support@subsmith.app within 14 days of payment for a full refund. Requests outside this window are considered on a case-by-case basis.
This refund policy is in addition to your statutory rights. Nothing in these Terms limits any rights or remedies you have where digital content is faulty, not as described, or otherwise doesn't meet applicable consumer law.
If a purchase is offered through Apple or another app store, that store processes the payment and its billing, cancellation, and refund rules also apply.
You agree to use SubSmith only for lawful purposes. You may not:
SubSmith — the application, branding, and website — is owned and operated by Ibrahim Farah trading as SubSmith. An Annual plan or Lifetime licence grants you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to use the application; it doesn't transfer ownership of the software to you.
Any video, audio, transcripts, or flashcards you create using SubSmith remain yours. Desktop transcription is performed locally. For mobile cloud transcription, you grant SubSmith and its service providers a limited permission to copy, transmit, process, and temporarily store the audio solely to provide and secure the requested feature.
SubSmith is built on open-source components, including Whisper and FFmpeg. See the Acknowledgements page for licenses.
You are responsible for maintaining control of your sign-in account and device. You may delete your mobile SubSmith account from Settings. Account deletion is permanent and removes associated server-side account, usage, transcription-job, and temporary media records, subject to legal obligations, fraud prevention, dispute resolution, and provider backup retention. The mobile app also attempts to remove its locally saved transcript sessions and thumbnails.
If you download SubSmith through Apple's App Store or another app marketplace, the marketplace's terms also apply. The marketplace is not responsible for operating or supporting SubSmith except where its own terms or applicable law require otherwise. For an iOS download, Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms and may enforce the mobile-app provisions against you.
SubSmith is provided with reasonable care and skill. Transcription accuracy depends on audio quality, language, and the speech-recognition system used, and I don't guarantee error-free transcripts. Mobile cloud features also depend on network availability and third-party services.
To the extent permitted by law, SubSmith isn't liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from use of the Service. Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits your statutory consumer rights, or liability where it would be unlawful to do so, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence.
These Terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. If you are a consumer, this doesn't affect any mandatory protections or rights to bring proceedings that apply where you live.
I may update these Terms occasionally. Material changes will be reflected by an updated "Last updated" date and, where reasonably practicable, communicated before they take effect. Changes won't retrospectively remove your paid licence rights or materially reduce a Lifetime licence without your agreement, except where a change is reasonably required by law, security, fraud prevention, or to prevent misuse of the Service.
